If your old paint is in good condition, give it a light sand with 240grit sandpaper. Clean up dust and wipe down with a damp cloth. If your paint is flaking or cracked you’ll need to sand it back to bare wood. Once you're back to bare wood, use 120grit sandpaper and sand in the direction of the woodgrain. Remember to wear a face mask. Fill any holes or cracks and be careful preparing any wood that was painted before 1960, as they may be coated with lead paint.
