Make sure it's a warm, dry day above 10°C and the wood is clean and dry. To prepare stained or varnished wood, give the wood a good sand. Then clean with white spirit and leave to dry. To prepare bare wood, give the wood a light sand, clean any dirt or dust with white spirit and leave to dry. If you're treating veneer, follow the suppliers guidelines. Check you're happy with the colour of the stain by testing it on a small hidden patch of wood.
